SARASOTA, Fla. (June 17, 2021) – Center For Sight is pleased to announce Joaquin O. De Rojas, M.D. has been appointed Director of Cornea and Ocular Surface Disease within the practice. De Rojas will remain a LASIK, corneal and cataract & lens replacement surgeon at Center For Sight, while also serving as the point of contact regarding the diagnosis, management and implementation of new technologies and therapeutics for the treatment of dry eye, ocular surface and corneal diseases. He has been a practicing ophthalmologist at Center For Sight since 2019.

“Dr. De Rojas plays an instrumental role in the care of Center For Sight patients,” said David Shoemaker, M.D., founder and director of cataract and lens replacement surgery. “I am confident that as he assumes the director position, he will encourage further collaboration, research, and lead the development of best practices to serve our patients in the community we love. I look forward to witnessing him take on this role with enthusiasm.”

De Rojas is a board-certified ophthalmologist and renowned expert in diagnosis of severe dry eye and ocular surface disease, Fuchs’ Dystrophy and Keratoconus. He also specializes in premium cataract and lens replacement surgery, as well as laser vision correction with LASIK, Epi-LASEK and implantable lenses. De Rojas received specialty fellowship training in cornea, cataract, refractive surgery and external diseases from The Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute.

“It is an exciting time at Center For Sight and US Eye as we continue to expand our outreach,” said De Rojas. “I am honored to be selected for this position and I am excited to continue working with our comprehensive eye doctors and staff across all of our offices to implement the latest technologies, establish best practices and continue to deliver excellent care to our patients.”

Center For Sight doctors have become aware over the years that the eye’s surface and overlying tear film, or ocular surface, is of paramount importance in delivering excellent vision, especially after premium cataract and laser vision correction surgery. Over 30 million people in the United States, specifically older individuals, suffer from dry eye or ocular surface-related issues which can manifest as intermittent blurring of vision, light sensitivity, glare, discomfort, foreign body sensation, burning, or excessive tearing. Center For Sight addresses these issues in an aggressive but strategic manner in order to grant patients the visual clarity and relief that they seek.

De Rojas is a key opinion leader and consultant for various companies that specialize in innovative treatments for ocular surface disease and ophthalmic surgery and is on the medical advisory board for the Lions Eye Institute for Transplant and Research in Tampa, Fla. Furthermore, he has extensive research experience, authoring numerous peer-reviewed publications, chapters and review articles and frequently presents his findings to other doctors at national and international medical conferences.

De Rojas treats patients at the Sarasota, Venice, Englewood and North Port offices of Center For Sight. To schedule an appointment, visit www.CenterForSight.net or call (941) 925-2020.
